Michelle in Plum
January 29th, 2010 by Sara
At the risk of readers getting mad and never coming back to Southern Protocol, I have to confess: I haven’t been able to jump on the “Michelle Obama is the modern Jackie O” bandwagon in the past year. Yes, she’s made some great fashion choices, and yes she definitely knows how to dress for her figure – but a new Jackie O? That’s insinuating that 50 years from now we’ll have Michelle O pictures hanging in trendy boutiques and little girl’s bedrooms. Which may happen, who knows, but she just needs to work a little harder and spend some more time dressing fabulously to be placed in that holy group of women. Please don’t throw tomatoes at the screen or send nasty emails.
That being said, I do appreciate her tasteful, appropriate fashion choices in her highly documented life. I appreciate that she dresses youthfully and in tandem with trends, avoiding the boring two-piece suits so many First Ladies before her chose. I’ll even say that I LOVED the plum Isaac Mizrahi outfit she wore the other night to her husband’s first State of the Union address.
The color is just heartbreakingly perfect with her skin tone (did you know purple – in its various shades – is the one color that looks great on everyone?), and the cut of that sweater top, with the 3/4 sleeves, fitted bodice and and crew neck, is a flattering hit on every shape. The dress is nipped it sweetly at the waist, and the heavier, textured feel of the skirt really dresses it up.
And of course the pearls – a true sign that maybe she is indeed somewhat, maybe a bit, like Jackie O.
