Fall Favorites
by SaraHave you found yourself a teensy bit happier this week? Perhaps you have a little skip in your step, or are singing along with the radio – windows down, obviously – a bit louder than usual? That’s our general consensus at Southern Protocol, because we couldn’t be more refreshed by the gorgeous fall weather. Fall means being outside without melting, pumpkins, candy corn, nearing holiday season… and snuggly-chic fall clothes.
While I honestly prefer warm-weather clothes – there’s just so much more flexibility! - this time of year makes me itch for boots and cardigans. A seasonal wardrobe change is ALWAYS a welcome change in my book! To make things even better, I really am loving almost all of the fall trends – the tailored, feminine silhouettes of the 1950s are making a comeback, and the colors couldn’t be more rich and flattering. What are my specific favorites? Check it out!
Color of the season: Camel
This luxe neutral is everywhere this season, and I couldn’t be happier about it. Richer than a tan but still basic enough to wear with all colors, it is the perfect neutral to stock up on this season. I am dying for a camel coat, like this one on ModCloth; it’s a flattering color for every skin tone, and really just gives a chic ambiance to your outfit. The best colors to pair with camel? Emerald greens, deep reds, burnt oranges… hello, elegant fabulous.
Shoe of the season: Ankle bootie
I realize the ankle bootie is not a NEW trend for fall; they really made their debut on the scene last year, but they are out again in full force this year. Wear with tights, dresses, skirts, pants… so versatile! Here in Charleston, when the weather doesn’t ever dip TOO low, you can even get away with bare legs and booties in the chillier months – shoes that stop right at your ankle (the thinnest part of your leg) really highlight those fabulous gams! If you want to get a little English preppy with it, find a pair of Oxford booties – they look simultaneously adorable and fashion forward with a tweed skirt and cozy sweater!
Silhouette of the season: Sophisticated ’50s
We’ve often broadcast our love of the 1950s silhouette; those women knew how to flaunt their assets in a chic, tasteful way! This fall we see a return to that way of smart dressing, with voluminous a-line skirts, cinched waists, kitten heels, pencil skirts, and perfect full figures. There is not a body type out there that can’t rock this look! A way to let it translate into your daily life a bit better? The shirtdress. Just make sure it has structure, hits right above or at your knee, and you accessorize with long necklaces.
Fun detail of the season: Sheer
Designers like Jason Wu and Diane von Furstenburg took the sheer trend to a level that would perhaps not be appropriate off the runway – your boss and friends don’t need to see your lady bits. But sheer paneling and details for evening are a way to be classy and sexy at the same time. I love the cocktail dresses that have sheer material over the chest and collarbones, as opposed to leaving it open as in seasons past!
